OVERVIEW
It started with a small realization...

Horse names that kept pointing back to Broadway.

Cossette
Phantom
Edelweiss
Hamilton

Not once or twice but over and over again, across different contexts, barns, rider/rodeo/competition types. The pattern was too consistent to ignore.

Why Broadway?

Horse culture has deep roots in sport, agriculture, tradition... money. So why were so many names pulling from musical theater?

I looked across multiple sources:
1
Conversations
With students, riders, and trainers at a local barn.
2
Online Communities
A slew of Reddit threads and online horse communities.
3
Naming Databases
I got access to official naming databases and registries.
CONVERSATIONS
I headed to a nearby riding school.

At Level Green Riding School, I was able to speak with 10 students and their parents. Where I heard comments like:

[stares at me like she's being punk'd]

I'm going to see The Outsiders this weekend.

OMG! I wish Lindsey was here, she loves musicals.

[mom embarrassing her]

She LOVES musicals, I’m forced to listen to them.

I personally don't, but I know so many who do.
What are their favorites?

Speaking with them further, I learned that there is a difference in the types of musical by generation.

The Gen Alpha horse girls mentioned titles like:

  • High School Musical
  • Pitch Perfect
  • KDH
  • Matilda

Their Gen X moms were fans of more classic broadway musicals:

  • Les Misérables
  • Chicago
  • AIDA
  • The Sound of Music
NAME DATABASES
I got member's only access.

I was able to get access to the United States Equestrian Federation database, where members:

Register their horses.
Connect with other members.
Find competitions.
Access TONS of resources.
Searching the database.

Looking up just 20 musical theater themed names.

INSIGHT
Horse girls are just theater kids with horses.

There are a few high school stereotypes that are pretty recognizable:

Theater kids
Show choir kids
Band kids
Different departments, similar reputation:
Extra
Loud
Breaking into song randomly
Dramatic
Performing constantly
Intense
Horse girls are performers too

Same energy, just a different stage.

1
Rehearsal & Repetition
Daily practice, training, refinement.
2
Identity & Belonging
It’s a role they live in, not step in and out of.
3
Costuming & Presentation
Wardrobe matters. Presentation is intentional.
4
Dramatic Tendencies
Being a little “extra” comes with the territory.
